Both dice must move together. This is the non-negotiable part. If one die shifts against the other during the throw — even slightly — they leave your hand at marginally different angles and spin on different axes. By the time they land, any relationship to the set you started with is gone. The whole point of placing the dice side by side and holding them as one object is to treat them as a single unit, not two dice that happen to be close to each other.
Finger contact should be light, not clamped. This is counterintuitive for most people. A tight grip creates tension in your hand and wrist, and that tension releases unevenly at the moment of the throw — producing a wobble in the dice just as they're leaving your fingers. The 3-Finger Diagonal (Most Common)
The 3-finger diagonal is the grip most commonly taught at dice-setting schools and described in instructional books. It's the starting point most controlled shooters learn first, and for good reason — it handles dice unity better than simpler grips while still allowing a natural throwing motion.
The setup: press the two dice together side by side and lay three fingers — typically the index, middle, and ring finger — across the top of both dice at a slight diagonal angle, so the fingers cross the gap between the two dice rather than sitting parallel to it. The thumb goes underneath, usually centered beneath the pair or slightly toward the near edge. The pinky finger typically rests lightly along the side or stays off the dice entirely.
The diagonal angle is the key detail. By crossing the fingers diagonally over both dice at once, each finger maintains contact with both dice simultaneously, which is what keeps them locked together as a unit. If your fingers sit straight across, parallel to the face of the dice, you lose some of that bridging contact and unity suffers.
The advantages of this grip are straightforward: it produces reliable dice unity in trained hands, it works well with the natural wrist and elbow motion most people already use when throwing, and it's well-documented enough that there's plenty of instructional material on exactly how to hold it. The disadvantages are equally honest. It takes substantial practice to make consistent — the diagonal angle has to become automatic, and early in training it's easy to let it drift slightly from throw to throw without noticing. The 2-Finger Grip (Pincer)
The 2-finger grip, sometimes called the pincer grip, strips the hold down to its minimum: index finger and thumb, one on each end of the two dice pressed together. The dice are held at the far short edges — one finger on the front, one on the back — with no fingers on top.
The theory behind this grip is that less surface contact means less interference with the dice's rotation. With only two contact points at the ends, there's less chance of uneven finger pressure twisting the dice off-axis during release. In principle, the dice can spin more freely on the axis you intend.
In practice, the tradeoff is dice unity. With no fingers bridging the top of both dice, there's nothing pressing them together from above, and the only thing keeping the two dice moving as one is the lateral pressure of the finger and thumb squeezing their ends. That works for some hand sizes and throwing styles but fails for others — the dice have more opportunity to separate mid-air, which is exactly what you're trying to prevent. The Stacked Grip
The stacked grip is less common and works differently from the side-by-side holds. Instead of pressing the dice together horizontally, the two dice are placed one on top of the other in a vertical stack. The fingertips hold the stack at the sides, and the throw is released so the dice separate just before or just as they land, ideally both completing the same rotation on the same axis.

Some shooters use it when the stacked configuration allows for a specific die-set orientation that's harder to achieve side by side. If the dice don't separate evenly — if one goes slightly higher or at a different angle than the other — you've introduced a variable the other grips don't have. The 4-Finger Grip (Full Hand)
The 4-finger grip puts all four fingers across the top of both dice with the thumb underneath — essentially the same structure as the 3-finger diagonal but with the pinky included and, usually, the fingers held straight across rather than at an angle. More surface area contacts the dice, and the full hand wraps them more completely.
For some shooters, particularly those with larger hands, the extra finger adds stability and makes the grip feel more secure. More contact means more of your hand is engaged in keeping the dice together, which can help with unity when the grip is well-trained.
The counterargument is that more fingers also means more opportunity for uneven pressure — four contact points across the dice are four ways to push slightly harder on one die than the other, or to release slightly unevenly. This grip appears less frequently in instructional literature than the 3-finger diagonal, but it's used by enough practitioners that it's worth describing accurately: it's a legitimate option for certain hand sizes and throwing styles, not an error to correct.
The Throw — What the Grip Is Trying to Accomplish
The grip only matters because of what it sets up. The throw is what actually determines whether any of this works, and it's worth being direct about what a controlled throw is supposed to look like, because it's quite different from how most people instinctively throw dice.
The goal is for both dice to leave your hand at the same moment, rotating on the same axis, with matching backspin. Not approximately — exactly. If one die leaves a fraction of a second before the other, or with slightly more spin, they're no longer behaving as a unit once they're in the air. The grip is what enables a simultaneous, matched release. Without the grip being right, the throw can't be right.
The arc should be low and soft. Not a lob high into the air — a high arc gives the dice more time in flight and more time to separate or tumble. Not a flat, hard throw along the felt either — that's a different problem. The ideal is a moderate arc, delivered at a pace that lets the dice arrive at the far end of the table with relatively low energy, so they touch down without a hard bounce.
The target is just short of the back wall. The dice should ideally land on the felt a few inches before the pyramids, slow down slightly on landing, and then tap the back wall softly rather than slamming into it. This is important: the pyramid-textured rubber on the back wall is specifically designed to randomize the bounce, and a harder throw means a harder impact with the pyramids, which produces a more chaotic scatter. None of this changes the underlying debate about whether any of it produces a measurable edge — it's just an accurate description of what practitioners are attempting. How well the back wall defeats any controlled rotation, regardless of how softly the dice arrive, is the question the research has so far failed to settle definitively in either direction.
Finding Your Grip
There is no single grip that works for every hand size and throwing style, and experienced practitioners will tell you the same thing. Hand geometry matters — finger length, thumb position, the width of your palm — and what produces clean dice unity for one shooter can be awkward and inconsistent for another. The grip that's most commonly taught isn't necessarily the right one for you, only the most logical starting point.
The honest advice from people who've spent serious time on this is to pick one grip and stick with it through a large practice sample before drawing any conclusions. 500 throws is a reasonable floor for starting to see whether a grip is working; 1,000 is better. Switching grips after 50 throws because something feels off doesn't tell you anything — early inconsistency is expected, and it takes repetition before a grip becomes automatic enough to evaluate fairly.
What to watch for as you practice: Do the dice stay together in the air? If they're visibly separating before they land, the grip isn't producing unity. Do they land roughly parallel to each other, or does one arrive at a noticeably different angle? Are they tumbling end-over-end in the air, or staying on axis? Tumbling means the release isn't clean — either the grip is inconsistent or there's tension in the wrist at the moment of release. Casino Rules to Know
A few casino-specific rules directly affect how any of this plays out at a real table, and they're worth knowing before you get there.
Both dice must hit the back wall. A throw that doesn't reach the far end is typically called a no-roll by the stickman and the throw doesn't count. This rule is enforced specifically to prevent a short, controlled toss that avoids the randomizing pyramid surface — which means the casino has already anticipated the soft-landing strategy and has a built-in counter to the most obvious version of it.
Dice must be thrown with one hand. No two-handed releases, no placing the dice on the layout and sliding them — it's a one-handed throw from the point of pickup to landing. Most controlled grip techniques are designed around one-handed throws anyway, but it's worth knowing explicitly.
Stickmen watch for controlled throws. How actively a given casino's crew monitors for this varies considerably by property and by floor shift, but most experienced stick personnel recognize what a shooter is doing when they take time to set the dice before every throw. Some casinos are more tolerant than others. Some properties have explicit policies; others leave it to floor discretion. You can ask to keep the same dice. After a seven-out, or any time the dice go off the table, you can tell the stickman "same dice" when they offer you a new pair.
